Change or Die - Why I Changed the Name of My Book......Again
My book started life as From Profit to Paycheck.
As I wrote, the book became deeply personal, and the title shifted to Money,My Secret Shame.
As I shared that title with others, I realised that it did not resonate with many people; the very people I hoped would read the book.
Based on their feedback, I needed a title that was broader, more faithful to the book and spoke more directly to its intended audience.
I went back to the questions the book poses and attempts to answer:
What drives my spending, saving and investing behaviours?
How do I make financial decisions?
How do I create the financial future that I want?
What do I need to change to create it?
And what prevents me from doing that?
Through my work with financial coaching clients, I have learned that the answers will be different for each of us. Beneath our financial behaviours are stories about who we are, what we learned, what we fear, what we value and what we believe we deserve.
These reflections led me to retitle the book: It’s Never About Money: Making Peace with the Past to Create Your Financial Future.
Changing and creating our financial future requires more than another app, another spreadsheet or greater discipline. It’s not enough to budget better, spend less or save more.
We need to understand what money represents to us and how this drives our financial behaviours. Without this awareness, we may keep repeating the same patterns even when we know better.
Our origin stories may have shaped our relationship with money, but they do not have to determine our financial future.
When we make peace with the past, we open ourselves up to creating a different financial future. We can decide what still serves us, what we can discard, and what we need to adapt or adopt.
